The Ponte dell Costituzione (“Bridge of the Constitution”) was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. It was built between 2002 and 2008.

Despite the architect having used typical Venetian materials such as glass and the marble from Istria that was also used for the historic buildings of the city, the bridge is still fairly controversial because of its modern design. “Real” (whatever that may mean) Venetians therefore sometimes pretend that the Ponte della Costituzione doesn’t exist and claim that there are only three bridges over the Grand Canal.

The price tag of the Ponte della Costituzione was about 13 million Euros which was almost twice as much as had originally been budgeted.
