San Paolo Church Assisi - entrance fresco

The facade is characterized by a huge entrance. The fresco above this gate is the work of Dono Doni. Of the three saints that were depicted (Paul, Benedict and Lorenzo Giustiniani), only two are still visible. The coat of arms accompanying the fresco is that of the monks of the San Giorgio in Alga.

The current entrance is on the right side of the church.

The interior consists of a single nave. This is divided by columns into seven spans. The columns are probably of ancient Roman origin.

The painting to the left of the entrance was probably the work of Matteo da Gualdo. It depicts the “Madonna and Child with Saints Lucia and Ansano” and was painted in 1475.

As of 1571 the church belonged to the shoemaker’s guild. The brick wall is decorated with depictions of a sole, an awl and a shoemaker’s knife. The two swords that are also depicted are attributes to St. Paul.
